Profile

Hi! I come to the JOIDES Resolution for the Colorado School of Mines. I'm a few years into my PhD program, with a few more to go. I'm sailing as THE Microbiologist (one and only). I'm so excited to have the chance to go where few have gone before. This is my first cruise and I hope that I get great samples, and don’t get sea sick.
As far as science goes, I'm hoping to learn about what kind of organisms are living in the marine sediments off the coast of Antarctica, with a particular interest in how these organisms are participating in the carbon cycle.
When I’m not away at sea, I like to spend my free time with my family and friends. I love riding my bike up and down the hills of Colorado, hiking, camping and snow showing too. I also enjoy singing karaoke, BBQs, kayaking and boating, pizza and green chiles.
I wanted to keep this blog so I could keep my family and friends informed about my trip. Most of my family lives in Maine, where I grew up. I also have many friends from my undergraduate school, Hartwick College of Oneonta New York, and many new friends from Ms Nicholson’s 4th grade class. (Hi Guys!).

Heading Home
Well folks, we are almost to the end. It is Saturday night and we have one more solid day before we roll into Hobart. The seas have been oddly calm. I was looking forward to the screaming fifties and the rolling forties - storms and adventure. But instead we have pea soup fog and glassy waters.
A.V.C - After the video conference
I was so lucky to have Steve ask me to help him with his video conferences yesterday. It was so fun to tell about our experience so far and to answer some of the questions from the students. And I see that some more questions have come in on my blog. All are really good - so I thought I would address them with a new blog today.
Just look outside!
Hello All! It’s been so long. I had some days when I worked pasted my 12 hours, and I became so tired, I had a hard time doing anything but going to bed. Other days it is just nice to read my book, or just go outside for a bit. We are getting close to end, which is good and bad. I have so many mixed feelings.
Catching up from sampling
Hello Out There! I know – It has been a long time. And I’m sorry, but I’ve been sooo busy! I don’t even know where to start – what day was what – everything has just been crazy.
Life on the JR
Dear World,
I don’t feel like writing much today ... but I do feel like posting pictures. So here is a picture show from my most favorite day so far....Last Sunday.
Checking out the Core
Well we have been here at our new site for a couple of days now, and we have already drilled about 500m.
Turbidites.....interesting
Well – we got core. (note the lack of exclamation point). We arrived on site a few days ago. First we began drilling with APC drilling (Advanced Piston Coring).
Are we there yet?
Greetings – (note: this was written yesterday – but I was unable to up load it until today) It’s been 1 week and 2 days and we are still traveling.
The First Iceberg!
Good morning, at least they call this the morning shift. Even though we have a few days before we reach our site, It is good for us to get used to our 12 hours shifts.
Getting Ready
Tuesday PM (52oS). There are still four days to go before we reach our first drilling location, but there is little down time here on the JR. We got to get orientated, organized, and practice our sampling plans so that everything runs as smoothly as possible when the first core comes.
