1 week 3 days from now
I am on the Education Outreach and Communication Team this summer as we spend 3 weeks aboard the R/V Atlantis. Last Summer I was an Outreach Officer for Expedition 327: Juan de Fuca Hydrogeology. I teach high school physics and geoscience in Toledo, Ohio. Ocean study in Ohio is under the heading “Paleozoic Geology”, it was good to be on board the JR for a more current study of the ocean.
The Team: Sharon, Lisa, Jackie, Jim, Randi, Ken
First: a question: If you have followed the Atlantis this summer, could you describe how it has influenced your interest in science or oceanography? Tell me about it, I want to know what you think!
What would YOU study, if you were here? As a scientist, when you have published many papers, perhaps there are accolades galore. But the road up is arduous and unglamorous, no matter how great you are. We have some GREAT graduate students who were picked to go on this expedition because of their tremendous work and abilities.
One wonderful gift for the teachers on board is the opportunity to talk with scientists about science and how it is done.
Here I am in what I imagine it would be like in the Mission Control Room for the Mars Rover, except it is very dark and a bit on the chilly side. I will never forget this.
Imagine if this was you, out on a ship doing oceanographic research for the summer!
Here is the JASON being prepared for the next trip to the bottom of the ocean!
What is this and what does it do?
