4 days of coring to go

"Core on deck, core on deck" resounds over the loud speaker for one last week. We will be bringing core up about every hour and a half today. Our group has been assigned to run the scanning and paleomag machines.

More Success!

Down she goes, down to the very bottom of the sea! Down to the bottom for science, plus a little bit of art. Good bye last friendly CORK!

Scientists, Engineer and Student pour over early results of a very important test

A first look at the data after a 24 hour Tracer Test appears to intrigue all. I suspect they all will be tossing and turning at night while the graph stays in their minds. They have waited years for this day. Here they are discussing the data.

Fascinating Graphs

How do scientists know what is going on when the drill bit is some 300 meters below the seafloor, which is another 1 ½ miles below the ship? By graphs!

video conference

Here are two of the people who were on the video conference today, Dustin and Jennifer in front of the sunrise, which is midday for them. Today was a very special day for me because I met all my students on a video conference. I have been waiting all trip for this day.  I had lots of fun sharing with them. I wish I had taken a screen shot to post in my room of them!

updated: Logging vs coring, good bye CORK

Today we are logging. What is logging and how is it different from coring?

Takeshi Paints CORK, ROV's work, 1/2 celebration!

Co-Chief Scientist Takeshi Tsuji paints a message on the CORK that will soon be deployed at the bottom of the ocean. Drillers, Crew, Scientists, Engineers and Artists all join in on the final touches before deployment. This blog is more about the fun we have off shift. Scientists are very focused when on shift.

Breakfast Lunch Dinner

Today I had breakfast with 2 scientists who were eating their dinner at the end of their shift and one who was in the middle of his shift so he was eating lunch. Although it is a daily occurrence, it is still strange to share the 3 different meals at one table. It reminds me when I enjoyed lunch at home when my teenagers were having breakfast.

"Core on Deck"

I could hardly sleep last night! Soon I would be seeing something that no one in the whole world had ever seen before. It was millions of years old and had once been so hot it was liquid and flowing out of a volcano. Here we are looking at it for the first time!
