1 week 3 days from now
I'm a graduate student at UC Santa Cruz working on completing a PhD in Geochemistry & Paleoceanography and I have a B.A. from Carleton College in Geology. I am broadly interested in how we can better understand climate sensitivity to changes in the global carbon cycle. Recently I have been focused on several events of rapid climate change in the Early Eocene that can serve in varying degrees as analogues to the present day and possible near future.
My research uses measurements of stable isotopes of carbon oxygen and helium present in marine sediments to constrain both how large these events of rapid global warming were and also how fast some of the changes took place and how long they took to recover.
This is my first ocean drilling expedition. It's pretty exciting to be out here so far from anything, able to reach records that are so remote. I still experience a sense of awe when I think about what we're doing, collecting pieces of earth history buried in hundreds of feet of sediment under miles of water to tell stories of events from millions of years ago.
... I'm running almost as fast as the corer does on its trip down and back up the drill string.
