Education Director, IODP's Deep Earth Academy, Washington, DC
Leslie Peart became Education Director for Deep Earth Academy, IODP's U.S. education program, in 2004. Prior to Deep Earth Academy, Leslie taught high school marine and environmental science in South Texas and held education positions at the Texas State Aquarium, the Alaska SeaLife Center, and Chicago's John G. Shedd Aquarium.
Leslie first sailed aboard the JR during Expedition 301T, a transit from Panama to Newfoundland that led her to develop IODP's U.S. education cornerstone School of Rock Teacher Research Experiences. Since then, she's made four more JR journeys including School of Rock 2005 (Expedition 312T), School of Rock 2009 (Expedition 321T) and Expeditions 320 and 327, as well as an IODP-related dive in DSV Alvin to service a CORK on the Juan de Fuca plate.
Dear friends, colleagues, and family at sea,
We wish you the Christmas of a lifetime! And we want to see pics of the dinner table...
Here's a special riddle to mark a special day. Why was it special? Because we put one of these in the seafloor, and it's the main reason we came to town. Oops, no, we didn't come to town, we came to sea.
Hi guys, Here's another riddle for you! Yes, I recycled the same three riddles from BJ, but Dinah gave us an all new picture.
Dear kids (especially my buddies Emma, Brett, and Leah),
My friends Bejonty, Dinah, and Tim have been helping us write new picture riddles to help kids and their families tour the ship!
Who is Jake Robinson and what is he doing on the JR? How about Stefan Mrozewski? Hmm. And what about the other 111 people onboard? Here's how you can find out!
So here we sit at Site 1301 B, and it looks the same as always. It looks like the same ocean outside the window, and from what I can tell from the monitor on my desk, the seafloor looks the same, too (see photo, above).
I see drilling out the window; we're expecting core sometime after midnight, depending on how rubbly it is down the hole. Everyone is prepared, from Lara the curator to the techs, scientists, and outreach personnel.
While the drillers are drilling, casing, and reaming, the scientists are preparing their corks and reviewing legacy cores, and the outreach team is working day and night behind the scenes.
Still having Wilkes Land withdrawls? Better get over it -- Juan de Fuca is just around the corner. Maybe this will help.
