Profile

Hello! I am Wiki the Kiwi. I am a bird that is native to New Zealand. I am about the size of a chicken, and like chickens, I can't fly. I love to eat all sorts of things - berries, nuts, worms and even grubs. That means I am an OMNIVORE - that is an animal who eats both plants and animals. I am very excited to be on the JR for this adventure. I was just minding my own business on the shelf in the airport gift shop in New Zealand (sitting on a shelf is very boring), and along came a scientist from New Zealand who was heading to Australia to meet the JR. He decided to bring me along and I am so glad he did.

Wiki the Kiwi's blog
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas Kids! Christmas on the ship has been very exciting. As you can see - my friends help me get in to the spirit to be a junior Santa with my own beard and hat!
On the ship, we keep working every day. Even when the day is a holiday like Christmas or Thanksgiving. But during the work we also had some great fun.
Let's Split!
When the core comes out of the ground it looks just like a big, giant drinking straw full of modeling clay! We use a plastic tube to hold the core and it's called a liner because it lines the inside of the drill pipe.
Tiny Fossils
I think I told you that Kiwis eat bugs didn't I? Well on the JR they study a tiny tiny kind of fossil called microfossils. The nickname for these fossils is "bugs".
Wiki Needs Help
Hey kids! I need some help. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the JOIDES Resolution, but everyone on board is SO busy. I thought maybe you could help me figure some things out because I know lots of smart kids are reading this blog!
Let's give it a try, and if it works out, maybe we can even make up our own guessing game!
How many cores?
Hi Kids! I'm sorry we haven't had a visit in so long. Things get very busy on the ship, and sometimes if you don't have a list of things to do, you forget.
Thanksgiving on the Ship
Today is Thanksgiving on the JR. My American friends helped me dress up for the occassion! Do you like my outfit?
Ready to Drill
Hello friends! It's Wiki the Kiwi again. I had a lovely visit with all my Kiwi friends during our shore leave. The ship had to stop for some fuel in Wellington. I spent some time in town and now I am ready to get busy helping the scientists with their work.
I'm Helping
Hi everyone! I am learning new things so that I can help when the core starts to arrive from the big drill on the ship.
Getting Started
Hi, it's Wiki the Kiwi again! Today I had a meeting with Stacie. She is a scientist on the ship.
Safety First
Safety is the most important thing on this ship. Everyone has to follow rules about how to stay safe while they do their work on the ship.
