Tripping Pipe


Hi crew: The JR is capable of staying in one place for an extended period of time so that it can core into the seafloor. Besides the 2 main screws at the stern of the vessel for moving forward, there are 5 thruster pods, each with 2 propellers, located around the perimeter of the ship. These thrusters are lowered when we arrive on station.

Now in business!


Wow! The last few days have been really busy, so I've not been able to blog. We started drilling our first hole (U1330A) on the 15th February! This was dedicated to downhole measurements and testing of logging equipment - meaning that my colleagues and I in the Logging Team were in business!

A Lovely Day at Sea

Well it’s another lovely day at sea today. The sun is out and the Pacific Ocean is nice and calm. I’m about half way through my 12-hour shift, and the JR is making good progress traveling at more than 10 knots. I’m one of the Logging Staff Scientists on the ship, and today we’ve been continuing to test all our tools to make sure we are going to be ready for when drilling operations start.

My First Expedition--Central America, 2004

My first cruise on the JOIDES Resolution was in September of 2004. We left rainy Astoria, Oregon and sailed south toward our final destination of Panama City, Panama. We reached our site off the coast of Costa Rica, where we were set to recover instrumentation from a borehole that had been collecting water samples for the last year and half.

Rogue Wave!


ODP Leg 208 (March - May 2003) took us from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, all the way across the Atlantic to Walvis Ridge (find both of these on a map!) and then back to Rio. As you might guess, we had more than a week of transit time each way.

Hi friends! I’m so excited for our upcoming journeys with the JR! I sailed on the first School of Rock expedition in November 2005 with a group of talented and engaged educators. When I first saw the JR sitting at the dock in Victoria, BC, I had only a vague idea of what it did and why it was important to modern scientific research.
