The JR is currently off the coast of New Zealand on Expedition 317: Canterbury Basin!
Cores have been coming up rapidly during this expedition and the scientific and technical team just drilled the deepest single bit hole and the deepest sedimentary hole ever drilled by the JOIDES Resolution – Hole U1352C. Congratulations to everyone on board!
And Happy Holidays!

On the catwalk. . .
As the Roughnecks remove core from the core barrel, they hand it directly to the techs, who carry the nearly 10 meter clear plastic tube to specially designed holders that hold the core at working level. There the Curatorial Specialist and the Assistant Lab Officer measure off 1.5 meter sections from the top of the recovery to the bottom of the recovery. As the measurements are made, each section is marked, using a felt tipped pen, with the core number and a section number. If you are lucky (or unlucky if you’re at the wrong end of your 12-hour shift) and have a full recovery, this will give you six 1.5 meter sections and a seventh section about 50 centimeters long.

From Julie Pollard:
One of the things students ask me about frequently is the food. How is it? What do you eat? What time do you eat? So I thought today we'd take a look at what it takes to feed an expedition of 126 people for 60 days.
