The JR left port in Tahiti on October 12 for the start of Expedition 329: South Pacific Gyre, investigating the physical and chemical limits of subseafloor microbial life in tectonic and oceanographic settings not yet explored! Be sure to follow along!

The first core of basement rock was brought on deck yesterday! There was a lot of anticipation, as we heard the infamous, "Core on deck" announcement; the scientists gathered on the core deck to see the first rock core of the expedition.

Deep Earth Academy was at the U.S. Science and Engineering Festival October 10-24, 2010 on the National Mall, sharing the excitement of ocean drilling and the JR.
