Abby Learns About Logging Tools

Abby spent some time today with the logging staff in the Downhole Lab. She learned that scientists can send instruments deep into holes that were already drilled. This is called logging the hole. These instruments can help scientists learn more about the rocks that are around the holes.

During this expedition, instruments similar to this will be sent down to learn more about the mountain below the sea called the Atlantis Massif.

Logging Tools

Good question, Anne Marie! It depends on the type of tool. Some tools take the rock's temperature, others test for magnetic properties, and others send sound waves through rocks to give scientists an idea of the kind of rock that surrounds the hole. When you can't see the rock because it is beneath the seafloor, tests like this can give scientists an idea of what it would "look" like if they could see it.
