What’s trapped inside?

What kind of animal is in this box?
Victoria is feeling rather lonely, because there are no other animal friends on board other than the 123 humans (who are best to keep away from for reasons better not thinking about!).
Sometimes a lone seagull will fly overhead. One day last week there were humpback whales and orca in the distance. Victoria can’t join in their fun though as the water is too cold for swimming at 8 degrees Celsius!
Victoria was touring the ship the other day and she came upon this 9.5 meter long grey wooden box. What could be in there, she thought? It has two openings, one at either end. Why would the box need to open on both sides? What is in the box?
It didn’t smell of anything in particular and like a scientist she always uses her nose for the best information, but no luck there. What could be in the box?
What do you think? Think of the length and location of the box?
Victoria heard one of the crew describe the box as an "alligator box"! Could there be alligators inside? Do alligators eat rats?
It’s probably best to keep away from the alligator box until she knows for sure!
