Exciting Time Out at Sea!

Well, we've been out at sea for just over two days now and I'm beginning to get my sea legs. Last evening and this morning we have experienced some rough seas which makes walking around a little challenging. We spent yesterday analyzing some core sediments and discussing the results. The cores show the Paleocence-Eocene boundary as preserved in the sediments. We also had our emergency drill yesterday. It was challenging to carry all of the required safety equipment through the corridors and up and down the stairwells. We had a hard hat, an immersion suit, and had to wear a life jacket.
Today we are scheduled to take a tour of the ship and learn about the drilling operations. It should be an exciting time. In addition, we will spend some more time in the core lab. You can never get enough time looking at cores and making smear slides. The smear slides let scientists see what types of micro-organisms lived at the time. We have been using the microscopes to analyze the slides that we are making.
