Wiki Needs Help

Hey kids!  I need some help.  I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the JOIDES Resolution, but everyone on board is SO busy.  I thought maybe you could help me figure some things out because I know lots of smart kids are reading this blog!

Let's give it a try, and if it works out, maybe we can even make up our own guessing game!

The first thing I need help with is these big orange things I see all over the ship, on the outside.  Here is a picture:

Can you help me figure out what these are and what they are for?

Life Preservers

Dear Wiki,

These orange things that you found all over the boat are life preservers. They float so if you fall out of the boat, into the water, the people on board the ship can through one down to you. Then you can climb in it and it will help you float until more help can arrive. These life preservers can save people's lives.
