SCHEDULE

Class will begin promptly at 8:00am each day, expect for the first and last days. End times will vary depending on labs and dinner schedules.  Below is schedule for our first day together and a glimpse of what we will cover during the week.
 
Sun June 8, 2014
11:30am – 1:30pm  Move into dorms – Wallwork Hall
2:30pm     Introductions and opening activities at 104 Walsh Hall
4:45pm     Depart for dinner BBQ at Dr. Hovan's house
8:00pm     Return back to campus
 
Mon June 9, 2014: Introduction to cores and seafloor sediments
Tues June 10, 2014: How science works and distribution of seafloor sediments
Wed June 11, 2014: Field trip to Scholocta and Bilger's Rock
Thurs June 12, 2014: Investigating the E/O and Chile Triple Junction
Fri June 13, 2014: Live broadcast with the JR, faults, and subduction
Sat June 14, 2014: Presentations
 
Sun June 15, 2014:
6am-7:15am: Move out of dorms
7:15am: Depart forCarnegie Museum event (friends & family welcome!)
10am-11am: Move out of dorms
                            

PARKING

We will provide parking passes for a parking lot near the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex (KCAC).


MEALS

Meals will be provided starting with dinner on Sunday June 8 and concluding with breakfast on Sunday June 15th. Please indicate any food allergies or restrictions on the Pre-Survey Form on the Getting Ready Page


HOUSING

We have reserved rooms at Wallwork Hall.  We will contact you with information about your roommate and move-in procedures.


UNITS & GRADES

Successful completion of this class will provide 3 credit hours of undergraduate coursework from IUP.  These credits may be applied to meet PA Act 48 professional development requirements for PA Certified Teachers and other PD credits are available.  Tuition/fees will be charged according to IUP standard summer rates.  The Consortium for Ocean Leadership will provide $500 stipend to each participant to help defray costs of tuition/fees. Grades for this course will be determined by the following distribution:

Participation during class, in field, etc.  25%
Student presentation and activities       25%
Course notebook and reflection            50%

CARNAGIE MUSEUM EVENT – Sunday June 15, 2014

We will be hosting a museum event to bring the excitement of scientific ocean drilling and the JOIDES Resolution to familes thorughout the day.  Plese feel free to have friends and family join us. Transportation availabile to and from IUP for School of Rock participants. Check back later for the schedule of events.
