What could be the title of a forthcoming movie premiering in theatres, become reality and since the first core arrived at the rig floor yesterday around 11h00 PM. Since then Expedition 339 participants have been listening the famous anouncement “Core on Deck<” each 30 minutes or so.

One of the main goals of Expedition 339 Science Party is to produce a marine reference section of Pleistocene millennial-scale climate variability and changes in surface and deepwater circulation along the Portuguese margin. So the coring strategy at the “Shackleton Site<” consists of using an Advanced Piston Corer (APC) to drill 4 holes, separated by a few tens of meters, to a maximum depth of 150 meters below sea floor (mbsf).

O que poderia ser o título de um filme a estrear brevemente nos cinemas, tornou-se realidade ontem à noite quando por volta das 23h00 chegou o primeiro tarolo à plataforma de perfuração doJR. Desde essa altura os participantes na Expedição 339 tem ouvido o famoso anúncio de mais um “Core on Deck<” a cada 30 minutos que passam.

Um dos principais objectivos da Expedição 339 é produzir uma secção marinha de referência da variabilidade climática à escala milenar e das mudanças na circulação das águas superficiais e profundas ao longo da Margem Continental Portuguesa. Assim, a estratégia de sondagem no “Shackleton Site<” consiste na utilização de um Advanced Piston Corer (APC) para realizar 4 furos, separados por poucas dezenas de metros, a uma profundidade máxima de 150 metros abaixo do fundo do mar.
