What are the cabins and bathrooms like on the JR? The cabins are nice and cozy. Each has a set of bunk beds with mattresses, sheets, pillows, comforters, lights for reading and curtains (to block out the cabin lights). They are really quite comfy. We also have a desk and chair, three drawers under the beds for clothes and suppies, and two lockers. Stowed above the lockers are PFDs (lifejackets), immersions suits (warm, neoprene suits in case we have to abandon ship) and a hard hat. The space is small, but has all of the necessities. Each cabin also has a sink, medicine cabinet and plenty of hooks to hang towels and jackets on. Most cabins share a toilet and shower with the cabin next door. The water pressure in the showers is amazingly strong and we don’t have to worry about running out of hot water. The JR even provides soap and towels!

The toilets (aka "heads") are pretty good on the scale of marine toilets. They operate by vacuum, so to flush them, you just push a button and away everything goes. They operate similar to toilets on airplanes. However, they break fairly easily, so there are some rules: only toilet paper–the kind wrapped in the green-printed paper–can go in the toilet, only push the flush button once, and if you think you need to, give a "courtesy flush" halfway through your process.

Beyond that, the wonderful JR stewards make our beds and clean our cabins every morning. We get fresh towels and can also have laundry done daily, we just set it outside our door in the morning. Our clothes are delivered clean and folded in the afternoon. What more could we ask for?

… I’m running almost as fast as the corer does on its trip down and back up the drill string.

One of the few recreational options of The JR is a fairly well equipped small gym on the upper ‘tween deck — now fortunately with air conditioning since the refit. I decided while I was changing so many other habits to adapt to living aboard I might as well get back into a regular exercise regimen. My resolve was only strengthened when I discovered that the food served in the galley is quite good and often served in large helpings.

At home I like to go running with my dog and on the ship there is a big TV in front of the treadmill in the gym. I was a little out of shape to start but after a few visits I worked my way back up to ~45 minute runs. A tricky bit I discovered was that I have to slow down a little to make sure I don’t get thrown off as the ship rolls underneath me mid stride.

As we prepared for the first site, in ~5300 m water depth, I noticed that if I pushed a little further I’d be running the equivalent distance as to the seafloor and back. So for most of the expedition so far I’ve been running 6.4 miles nearly every other day. It takes me about an hour, so averaged out I’m running almost as fast as the corer does on its trip down and back up the drill string. Though, I’m not carrying >100 lbs of core with me for the second half.

From the editor — aka Leslie: Our cabins on The JR are quiet and comfortable; kind stewards make our beds, change our sheets, leave fresh towels, and do our laundry. The salad bar is great and you can eat breakfast, lunch or dinner four times every day. The mattresses are fresh and new and the view is spectacular. Being on a new ship, however, means learning new things every day, including how to operate the new showers and toilets. Jerry Bode describes them very well…

Great Showers

The rooms are nice as they are new and are limited to only 2 people. Being new, the really nice thing is everything works, mostly. The room is not without problems, however. The shower is great and has a flow rate we can only dream about on shore. Only it hits me right in the face and the only adjustment is left or right, not up down.

While it hits me in the face, for all the people who share the shower (3 in all) the spray goes over their heads. They have to remove the shower head and hold it in their hands, but then what do you do when the seas are rough (like this morning) and you need to hold the handhold?

Risky Business

The other problem is one that is actually ship-wide, and that is the toilet system. It is a state-of-the-art vacuum system much like the airlines use. It is a good system, but takes some getting used to. When you push the activate button the system can act quickly, but usually thinks about it for up to 10 or 15 seconds. Once it determines it OK to work, the toilet starts making some odd noises and then opens the valves and sucks the contents down to the bowels of the ship accompanied by a sound reminiscent of a Saturn rocket taking off. If there is a vacuum leak anywhere, or the system decides it wants a break, then a call to the Engine Room may be required.
