As you can tell from the previous blog entries the challenges that we have faced during the weekend are good examples on how sometimes science can be hard, difficult, and challenging. However, while talking about the drilling challenges with some crew members I realized that almost every expedition has its own issues. Fortunately, the crew aboard the JR can always either fix the problem, or find an alternative method or a new solution to carry on. These guys really know what they are doing!

Como puderam perceber a partir leitura das entradas anteriores do blogue os desafios que enfrentámos durante o fim de semana são bons exemplos de como a ciência às vezes pode ser um desafio duro e difícil. Contudo, ao falar sobre as dificuldades com que nos deparámos com alguns membros da tripulação, percebi que quase todas as expedições tem seus próprios problemas. Felizmente, a tripulação a bordo do JR consegue sempre corrigir o problema ou encontrar uma alternativa ou uma nova solução para seguir em frente.

Although the issues previously described slowed the core flow the scientific teams continued to describe and examine the cores and samples recovered at Site U1386 (GC-01A) and to work on the site reports.

Embora as dificuldades anteriormente descritas tenham diminuido o chamado "fluxo do tarolos" as várias equipas científicas continuaram a descrever, a analisar e a recolher amostras dos testemunhos de sedimentos recolhidos no Site U1386 (GC-01A), e a trabalhar nos relatórios que têm de fazer acerca do trabalho realizado em cada local que é perfurado.

 

At the end of their shift some scientists have the opportunity to enjoy the sunny weather that we have been experiencing in the last days. On the photo below you can see them enjoying the sunshine on the so called ‘Steel beach’ located at the highest deck on the ship.

No final dos seus turnos, alguns cientistas têm tido a oportunidade de desfrutar do tempo ensolarado que temos tido nos últimos dias. Na foto em baixo podem vê-los a desfrutar do sol na chamada 'Praia de Aço' que se localiza no convés superior do navio. Obviamente não é uma verdadeira praia, mas podemos sempre imaginar que estamos numa ilha no meio do oceano.

 

And we are so close to shore that we are often visited by birds, so another popular recrational activity during the last days has been birdwatching. Can you help us identifying the species of the bird in the photo below?

E nós estamos tão perto da costa que somos frequentemente visitadas por diversas espécies de aves. Outra actividade recreativa que tem sido bastante popular durante os últimos dias é a observação de aves. Podes ajudar-nos a identificar a espécie de ave da fotografia?
