Activity Summary: Students will be able to explain how veins form in rock and what those veins tell us about past environments and measure veins in rocks and describe what these measurements can tell us about the veins.
This lesson is focused on the types and formation of rock veins that are found in ocean sediment cores. Part 1 of the Lesson provides background information about how veins are formed and why they matter. Part 2 is a quick introduction to measuring the lengths of veins in basalt cores. This lesson can be part of lessons on the Rock Cycle, Rock Formation, or Earthquakes.
