Actvity Summary: Students will be able to analyze ocean sediment cores taken from Brothers Volcano to describe the types of rocks found there and explain how these rocks tell the history of volcanic activity in the area.
This lesson has students analyze data on cores taken from Brothers volcano, the site of IODP Expedition 376. The data focuses on the minerals and levels of metamorphism within volcanoes and hydrothermal vents associated with a subduction zone. Before this lesson, students should be familiar with volcanic activity, mineral and rock types, and plate tectonics. This lesson has students analyze data on cores taken from Brothers volcano, the site of IODP Expedition 376. This lesson has been revised and updated based on Volcanoes, Vents, and GIFs.
