Another thing I realized being on board the JR is that Geology is a very complex field of study and every scientist on the ship can not be completely defined under the term “Geologist”.

Now I’m going to name all the kinds of “Geologists” we have on board and during the expedition we will discover more about their jobs in the ship. Likely the name will help us figure out their field of expertise.

Un altro aspetto che ho capito stando a bordo della JR e’ che la Geologia e’ un campo di studio veramente complesso e che  ogni scienziato a bordo della nave non puo’ essere completamente definito dal termine “Geologo”.

Ma vediamo di dare un nome a tutti questi tipi di geologi che ci sono a bordo! Spesso il nome ci aiuta ad intuire di cosa si occupano ma nel corso della spedizione li conosceremo meglio tutti quanti.

We have “Sedimentologists” that describe the cores (please, don’t think that is so easy!).

Abbiamo i Sedimentologi che descrivono le carote di sedimento (per favore, non pensate sia cosi’ semplice)

We have “Petrologists” that study the hard rocks (they can not wait to reach the basement!)

Abbiamo i Petrologi che studiano le rocce  e che non vedono l’ora che venga raggiunto il basement sotto i sedimenti.

And also there are the “Structural Geologists” that study the geometry and composition of the Earth ( I know, it is a very simple explanation but I promise more later!)

Ci sono i Geologi Strutturali. La loro ricerca riguarda la geometria e la composizione della Terra (Lo so che e’ veramente una spieagazione semplificata ma prometto di approfondire in seguito)

We have the “Paleomagnetists” that measure the magnetic field of the Earth preserved in the rocks when they formed.

Abbiamo i Paleomagnetisti che misurano il campo magnetico della Terra preservato nelle rocce quando queste si sono formate.

The “Geochemists” that do some basic chemical analyses of the core looking for certain elements.

I Geochimici che misurano la concentrazione di certi elementi nelle carote di sedimento.

And the Micropaleontoligists that look for microfossils in the sediments to define their age.

Ci sono i Micropaleontologi che cercano i microfossili presenti nei sedimenti cercando di definire la loro eta’.

And last but not the least (actually the first people to analyze the cores) the “Petrophysicists” that measure the physical properties of a core once it has been retrieved.

Ultimi ma non meno importanti (veramente sono proprio i primi ad analizzare la carota di sedimento) i Petrofisici che misurano le proprieta’ fisiche delle carote appena estratte.

Studying a core really is team work! Studiare una carota di sedimento e’ proprio un lavoro di squadra!
