24-26 Janvier 2014.
Je suis arrivée à Hong Kong vendredi soir, après 2h d’avion entre Toulouse et Paris, et 11h d’avion entre Paris et Hong Kong. Après le rush des derniers jours, c’était facile de dormir dans l’avion.
Samedi matin j’ai trouvé une grande librairie et j’ai pu acheter des livres recommandés par mon neveu Hugo pour apprendre le chinois à bord (je n’aurai plus d’excuses). J’ai aussi réussi à me faire couper les cheveux… avec juste une photo comme modèle et quelques mots d’anglais, le résultat est tout à fait convenable!
L’après-midi presque tout le groupe de scientifiques participant à la campagne est allé écouter une conférence à l’Université de Hong Kong pour les Sciences et la Technologie sur le programme de forages IODP. Quel campus agréable ! Nous avons pu commencer à nous connaître, et discuter autour d’un buffet et d’un verre. De retour à l’hôtel le soir, c’était la bonne heure pour parler à toute la famille via internet.
Aujourd’hui nous sommes enfin montés à bord du Joides Resolution! C’est un énorme bateau (presque deux fois la longueur de l’Atalante) dédié aux forages. Nous apprendrons nos tâches à bord petit à petit. Nous sommes installés dans nos cabines, et avons quartier libre le soir, jusqu’au départ mercredi matin.

I arrived in Hong Kong Friday night, after a 2-hour flight between Toulouse and Paris, and an 11-hour flight from Paris to Hong Kong. After the rush of the last few days, it has been easy to sleep in the airplane.
Saturday morning, I could find a nice bookshop and buy the books recommended by my nephew Hugo to learn Chinese on board (now I have no excuses). I also got my hair cut! With only a photo as model, and a few words in English, the result is quite acceptable!
In the afternoon, almost all the scientific participants to the cruise went to a conference on the IODP programme at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Nice campus! We got to know each other a little better, and discuss around a buffet diner and drinks. Back to the hotel at night, it was a good time to communicate with the family on the internet.
Today we have finally got onboard the Joides Resolution! It is (she is?) a very long ship dedicated to drilling. We will learn more about our tasks onboard in the next few days. We are now installed in our cabins, and can go on land in the evening, until Wednesday morning when the ship will leave the harbor.
