Behind the Science – Sometimes is coring and sometimes is “casing”

We don’t always drill the seafloor to core. Sometimes before we core we need to do another process called casing.

Let’s try to understand what the casing is. If you compare this video with the one on the previous post about tripping pipes you will realize that the pipes in this one are bigger.

Usually at the top of a casing system there is a reentry cone.

 

There are different reason to use a casing and a reentry cone: 1) provide access to deeper formation 2) stabilize the sediments around the drilling system 3) install borehole experiments.
