In early April of 1778 Cook was navigating the HMS Resolution through the same strait we will be traveling through tomorrow as we depart for the CORK site.  In addition to mapping the outlets while in pursuit of the Northwest Passage, Cook was also seeking timber to create a new mizzenmast and foremast.  The hewing and installation of these masts took approximately 3 weeks!  Interestingly, while walking between the JOIDES docked at Ogden Point and downtown Victoria we pass the “Bent Mast Restaurant.”  The restaurant is located in the James Bay neighborhood and I can’t help but wonder (and perhaps hope) that there is indeed a historical connection and not just simple coincidence.  While I’ve enjoyed wandering around Victoria and thinking about the impact of Cook’s expedition on the surrounding area, I am really excited to pass through the Juan de Fuca Strait and get on with the scientific aspect of the mission!

While I’ve enjoyed wandering around Victoria and thinking about the impact of Cook’s expedition on the surrounding area, I am really excited to transit through the Juan de Fuca Strait and get on with the scientific aspect of the mission!  We’ve been asked to begin reflecting on a variety of topics, including a reminder about how we learn ourselves, but the most beautiful reflections of the day were a result of the clearing weather and calm harbor.
