Day 2 at Site 1

We are stilling drilling the first hole. So far 13 cores have been retrieved and we have drilled to a depth of 52.8 meters beneath the seafloor. Starting with core 5, drilling has been slowed due to hitting a layer of chert. The cores have not been complete due to this. The photo shows you what we are getting, the chert fragments are about .5 inches in diameter. The planned depth of the hole is about 74 meters so we still have a way to go. For those not familiar with chert, it is a very hard substance, and is made of quartz. There is a layer of this within the soft sediments.
