Welcome Aboard Expedition 372!
Welcome to IODP Expedition 372: Creeping Gas Hydrate Slides and Hikurangi LWD!
Kia ora koutou! My name is Erin Todd and I am a seismologist in New Zealand with a passion for science communication and outreach! I’ll be one of the two Education and Outreach Officers to bring the science we are doing on expedition 372 directly to you!
The science party and crew joined the JOIDES Resolution in Fremantle, Australia. Excitement on board has been high during our port call as we prepare to embark on a long transit to New Zealand to investigate underwater landslides and the shallowest part of Hikurangi subduction zone. For the past three days, the science party has been busy attending meetings to ensure to discuss the expedition objectives and goals.
At 143 meters long, the JOIDES Resolution is a BIG ship! As a result, it takes a while to be able to get where you need to go without getting lost. Those of us who are new to the ship have been using the port call to get our bearings and learn our way around the ship.
Yesterday was a free day for the science party to collect last minute supplies or tour the area before we leave port today! Now we are waiting for the remaining fuel to be brought on board and we are hours away from departure! More coming soon from the Indian Ocean!
Ngā mihi!
