Erster Einsatz: South Chamorro Seamount

“Korken an Deck”
Statt des üblichen “Core on the Deck” heisst es diesmal “Cork on the Deck”.
“Cork On The Deck”
On Dec.14 the Jiodes Resolution has reached its first Site, the south Chamorro Seamount, a Mud-Vulcanoe reaching about 2000 m. altitude above seafloor. The mission, to extract the so called “cork”, an old steel-capsule covering an existing drill hole, could only partly be realized, because the cork broke into pieces while being extracted. Nevertheless a part of it could be brought on deck. Scientists, foremost the microbiologists took samples from the encrusted material to analyze the microfauna. So this time it could not be said: “Core on The Deck” but it was “Cork on the Deck”. Science proceeds while the samples are analyzed and the ship passes over to its first drill site.
