How do scientists better see rocks?

Once the core is on deck the process of examination begins. For a core describer when it comes to rock a closer look can help lead them to a better determination of the rock. In order to get a closer look a thin section is made from a chunk of the rock by our thin Section tech Susan Boehm. She glues the rock to the slide and slowly grinds it down to a translucent layer that can be viewed under the microscope. Here is a  video of the process for #thinsectionthursday
