July 25, we are about to finish our 371T expedition – 2017 School of Rock (SOR). We have only two more nights on board, and the question of the day: “One thing that surprised you in SOR?” led us to reflect on everything we have experienced together since the day we entered in JR (JOIDES Resolution) on July 8: the magnificence of the JR and its stability, the number of new things we have learned, the different ways of approaching issues already known, the inclusion of diversity associated with scientific discussions, the excitement of the Rockers, the depth of knowledge and the ability to transmit teachings by the instructors, the quality of the accommodations and services of the JR, the flavor and diversity of meals, the expectation of crossing the Equator, the excellence of the laboratories distributed on the seven floors of the JR, not forgetting the sustainability of the ship’s environment. In addition to the friendship established day by day among the participants and instructors of SOR, little by little built, amplified by the knowledge of the other Rockers, after every new question of the day, or the discovery of poets and writers in telling stories, associated with good coexistence between the crew, the technicians and the scientists, all contributing in synergy to achieve the objectives of the expedition in the best possible way. The world would certainly be much better if life were  always lived like that. Without a doubt, we are privileged to have the opportunity to navigate the JR and none of us will forget this experience.

After reflection, the relaxation through a raffle (a book, IODP stamps, a drill bit), followed by the printing of the Expedition logo on our T-shirts, finishing in the Lab, and work on  Reports and Plans, that must be ready before leaving the JR, as future  IODP ambassadors and scientists, with a commitment to transmit geosciences to society. And specifically for the Brazilian Rockers, replicate the School of Rock to Brazil.

 

25 de julho, estamos próximos de finalizar nossa expedição, temos apenas mais duas noites a bordo, e a pergunta do dia: “Uma coisa que surpreendeu você na Escola das Rochas (School of Rock SOR)?”,  nos levou a refletir sobre tudo que  vivenciamos juntos desde o dia que entramos no JR (JOIDES Resolution), em 08 de julho: a imponência do JR e a sua estabilidade, a quantidade de coisas novas que aprendemos, a forma diferente de abordar assuntos já conhecidos, a inclusão da diversidade associada as discussões cientificas, a empolgação dos participantes, a profundidade do conhecimento e a capacidade de transmissão de ensinamentos por parte dos instrutores, a qualidade das acomodações e serviços do JR, o sabor e a diversidade das refeições, a expectativa de cruzar a linha do Equador, a admiração pela excelência dos laboratórios espalhados nos sete andares do navio,  sem esquecer do cuidado com o meio ambiente.

Adicionalmente a amizade estabelecida dia a dia, entre os participantes  e instrutores da SOR, pouco a pouco construída, ampliada pelo conhecimento do outro, a cada nova pergunta do dia, ou a descoberta dos poetas e escritores ao contar estórias das rochas, associada a boa convivência entre a tripulação, os técnicos e os cientistas, todos contribuindo em sinergia para alcançar os objetivos da expedição da melhor forma possível.

O mundo certamente seria muito melhor se a vida lá fora fosse levada assim, com o bem comum acima de tudo. Sem dúvida, somos privilegiados de ter a oportunidade de navegar no JR e nenhum de nós ira esquecer essa experiência.

Depois da reflexão, a descontração através do sorteio de livros e carimbos IODP, seguido da impressão do logo da Expedição em nossas camisetas, e a preparação dos relatórios  que devem estar prontos antes do desembarque, assim como nossos planos de ação, como futuros embaixadores do IODP e cientistas, com o compromisso de transmitir as geociências a sociedade. E especificamente para os brasileiros, levar a Escola das Rochas para o Brasil.
