The dream is to afford students an opportunity to experience firsthand what IODP is about and also an introduction of sorts to a university campus environment. In the summer of 2008 I teamed up with IODP, Deep Earth Academy, and Texas A&M University to take students from John Jay High School to Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. We called it the Summer Pre-College Ocean Research Experience. Here they learned about everything including ocean drilling, core samples, marine biology, and the university experience. Again, we collaborated this past summer to take a larger number of students to A&M with the goal and student commitment to integrate this experience into their Science Fair projects.
Editor’s note, if you really want to get a taste of this project, WATCH THE VIDEO and take a moment to look at the photos attached. It takes a minute to download, but seeing high school students working with cores is worth the effort! Well, and ok, it is wonderful to see them in the agricultural setting, too.
