J/aRt Competition Rules

1. Artwork must be created on 11” x 8.5” or 11” x 14” paper with a landscape (wider than tall) orientation. The artwork should be mounted on cardboard or posterboard with overall dimensions not to exceed 15” x 18”.
2. Entries must be original, hand-produced artwork focused on a deep sea drilling or science career theme. Please do not use copyrighted material. Entries with inappropriate language or subject matter will not be accepted.
3. Renderings of the JOIDES Resolution or other science objects may be based upon existing published imagery, but they must be creatively modified in the artist’s own style.
4. Any media may be used, provided the piece is flat (no more than 4 inches in depth) and suitable for hanging. Mixed media, crayons, markers, pen and ink, colored pencils, paint, pastels, glue, glitter, collage, sand, yarn and other materials that create texture may be used and are encouraged!
5. All images must be dry and flat before submission in order to be included.
6. A completed entry form, signed by a parent, teacher, or guardian must be attached to the back of the artwork.
7. Participation is open to students in the United States, aged 5-17 years old. Three prizes within each age group will be awarded. Competition age groups are: 5-8; 9-12; 13-17 years of age.
8. Employees of the JOIDES Resolution or the Consortium for Ocean Leadership and their immediate family members (i.e. spouses, parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, and siblings) are not eligible to enter.
9. All reproduction rights to submitted artwork will remain with the artists. However, all prize winners shall agree that the Consortium for Ocean Leadership be granted non-exclusive reproduction rights for advertising, promotion, website, and print publication purposes.
10. All entries must be received no later than midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST), November 10, 2009.

Competition Awards: All prizes have no monetary value and constitute recognition and educational value only.
Student Winners: Awards will announced for First, Second and Third prize winners in each age group on line and at a Consortium for Ocean Leadership meeting in February 2010.
First Prize (each category): JOIDES Resolution crew, staff and/or educators will visit your classroom to do a special program for you.
Second Prize (each category): The JOIDES Resolution crew and staff will do a live video conference program from the ship to your school.
Third Prize (each category): You, your teacher or classroom will be featured on thejr.org.
Schools of Student Winners: Each winning student (first, second and third place, each category) will also earn an education packet for their own school. These education packets will include a compilation of Consortium for Ocean Leadership printed educational materials concerning the JOIDES Resolution and ocean drilling.
